The first exhibition at azumagaoka articulation, a mixed-use facility created by renovating several long-unused houses. Central Yokohama was originally a bay; the city as we know it came into being in the Edo period when that bay was filled in and turned into land. At that time the hills around Azumagaoka, where this exhibition was held, were cut away and used as fill, and several structures from that work remain in the area. Azumagaoka, with its many cliffs and flights of steps, is a place that came into being in order to make the ground on which Yokohama now stands. Cliffs and Stairs set out to focus on the history of Yokohama that this venue tells, and at the same time to lay the cliffs and stairs of the site over the lives and ways of living of the artists and of people in general, asking what a life is and what it is to live.
