Summary

A series of events by the artists and creators involved in the renewal of the displays and spaces at JICA Yokohama. We planned and delivered an online artist’s talk by Hiroshi Fuji, a former Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer; an artist’s talk in conversation format and an interview broadcast with Oscar Oiwa, a second-generation Brazilian-Japanese artist born and raised in Sao Paulo; and a workshop by the illustrator and former primary school teacher Makoto Ikutake. Participants came with interests ranging from art to international cooperation. Hiroshi Fuji’s talk was held over Zoom, and he spoke about his experiences as a volunteer in Papua New Guinea and their influence on his later practice as an artist; time was set aside for questions at the end, making it a genuinely two-way conversation with the audience. Oscar Oiwa’s talk was held as a three-way conversation with a former member of staff of the Japanese Overseas Migration Museum at JICA Yokohama and offsociety’s representative, and was released on JICA’s official YouTube channel. It covered Oiwa’s roots, his view of Nikkei society, and the story behind Travelling Around the World, the work newly installed as part of the renewal – subjects particular to the setting of JICA Yokohama. Footage of the making of that work was also filmed and released on JICA’s official YouTube channel together with an interview. Makoto Ikutake’s workshop was aimed at children of around primary school age: they coloured in illustrations relating to Nikkei culture and international society and attached them to The Journey of Japanese Emigrants, the large mural he produced for the renewal, with the aim of sparking interest in international society and Nikkei culture. Many families came on the day, which also helped present JICA Yokohama as a place to visit with children.
