Shanghai Art Center & Outdoor Art Project

Summary

A plan to convert a historic building constructed in the 1800s in central Shanghai into an art museum and art centre. The project began with the client’s wish to give the building new life as a museum. Because the client was a private company, we judged that operating it purely as a museum would not be financially sustainable. We therefore planned exhibition and display spaces while letting part of the floor area, using the rental income to fund exhibitions — designing the operating method and revenue structure so that the facility could be run stably over the long term.
