Summary

A public workshop led by Kensaku Kato, the graphic designer and art director behind the symbol mark and logo design for the new Hachinohe Art Museum. Participants added their own drawings and lettering to T-shirts printed with the symbol mark, working to the theme of “the future of Hachinohe”, to create an original shirt. Participants on the day ranged from primary school children to adults. A curator explained the museum’s concept, Kato introduced his past work and talked about ways of thinking about “the future of Hachinohe”, and while people worked he spoke with each participant in turn. Many of those who came had an interest in design, and the results included T-shirts of a striking standard and originality that surprised even Kato. Once the shirts were finished each person presented their own work, and at the end everyone put their shirt on for a group photograph – the symbol mark becoming a starting point for conversation between participants.
